LivingEars Podcast Volume Six – Top 10 of 2008

After 6 months of bringing some of the best music of the year it is now time to recognize the top songs that made 2008 great. These are the 10 songs I kept going back to over and over, the 10 songs that have forever made their mark on 2008 and definitely some of the songs I’ll be going back to the most throughout 2009.

1. The Hold Steady – Constructive Summer
2. Titus Andronicus – Upon Viewing Brueghel’s “Landscape With the Fall of Icarus”
3. Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines
4. Friendly Fires – Paris (Aeroplane Remix)
5. No Age – Teen Creeps
6. The Dodos – Jodi
7. The Raveonettes – Aly, Walk With Me
8. Portishead – Machine Gun
9. Deerhunter – Nothing Ever Happened
10. Hercules & Love Affair – Blind

I wanted to highlight some of the songs that I chose for the top 51 of 2008 as well so you will hear a couple of songs that you might not have otherwise heard before.

Entire playlist is in the comments.

Just as a reminder, if you want to stay up to date with the site I’ll send (very) occasional emails. You can leave your address in the email box on the right of this page or you can come straight to the Google group.

Happy 2009.

LivingEars Best of 2008: Songs: 51-11

It has taken a LONG time to get this list made, I’ve spent the last hour alone trying to get it down to 50 songs but I just can’t do it. I wouldn’t want to be without any of these songs and depriving yourself of any one of them just might cause irreparable harm to your already dying soul. This is not something I want so I’m compelled to keep it at 51. These are what I would consider the 51 best songs of the year.

Obviously my tastes lean heavily toward college/indie/blog rock and electronic so please forgive me for missing the best (insert genre here) song. For those of you looking for a place to start, if there is a particular genre you are fond of (or one you hate!) hit me up in the comments and I’ll steer you toward a couple songs you might like.

Check for a podcast featuring the Top 10 in the coming days. For now, take some time to digest some of these and tell me what your favorite songs of 2008 were and tell me which songs on my list suck!

Right click and save as to download any song and of course if you find something you like, buy the album or support the band in some way.

LivingEars Best of 2008: Albums

If you follow the site and the podcasts much of this list may not come as a surprise, I’ve been talking about these bands since we launched and have featured songs from most of these albums in a podcast (or two!). You’d be doing yourself a favor by purchasing any of these albums, Titus and No Age for that young punk in all of us, Okkervil River for those times we need to feel inspired, Sebastien Tellier for when we need to set the mood and The Hold Steady for the aging (slightly!) punk in all of us.

In addition to the albums featured below, Los Campesinos! put out two albums this year, one was okay (We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed) and one was top notch (Hold On Now, Youngster…). The latter would have made this years list but it leaked late in ’07 and ended up on last years list. Be Your Own Pet made an excellent album (and sadly it ended up being their last). We Are Scientists had a pretty cohesive and strong release with Brain Thrust Mastery. Fucked Up and Frightened Rabbit also put out some really great music this year. But in the end the 10 albums below just got more play and were stronger as a whole. I hope you find something you like.

Nowadays, sadly, the more interesting year end lists are the song lists. I will feature my favorite songs of ’08 in an upcoming podcast and, because of that, the albums list is not going to highlight an album’s best song but rather what I would consider to be the next best song. Hooray for judging art!
