Titus Andronicus – Absolute Zero

(Vid via P4K TV)

Titus Andronicus have made a tour video! I’m not exactly sure what the plans are here; there is a one minute trailer version floating around so I’m not sure if this is the entire video or if they are going to be putting out something even more in depth than this. I certainly hope so because this video goes from Denver to San Fran and skips the once-in-a-lifetime-because-I-was-the-sole-attendee show that I got to witness. I don’t remember the band breaking out the vid cam that night though so there probably isn’t any footaget. There is a pretty great segment in this video where the band breaks into Phantom Planet’s California.

The last line in the vid mentions another video that follows the band on their No Age tour. So maybe there is a series of these coming??? I’ll keep you posted if you promise to do the same for me.

LivingEars Best of 2008: Albums

If you follow the site and the podcasts much of this list may not come as a surprise, I’ve been talking about these bands since we launched and have featured songs from most of these albums in a podcast (or two!). You’d be doing yourself a favor by purchasing any of these albums, Titus and No Age for that young punk in all of us, Okkervil River for those times we need to feel inspired, Sebastien Tellier for when we need to set the mood and The Hold Steady for the aging (slightly!) punk in all of us.

In addition to the albums featured below, Los Campesinos! put out two albums this year, one was okay (We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed) and one was top notch (Hold On Now, Youngster…). The latter would have made this years list but it leaked late in ’07 and ended up on last years list. Be Your Own Pet made an excellent album (and sadly it ended up being their last). We Are Scientists had a pretty cohesive and strong release with Brain Thrust Mastery. Fucked Up and Frightened Rabbit also put out some really great music this year. But in the end the 10 albums below just got more play and were stronger as a whole. I hope you find something you like.

Nowadays, sadly, the more interesting year end lists are the song lists. I will feature my favorite songs of ’08 in an upcoming podcast and, because of that, the albums list is not going to highlight an album’s best song but rather what I would consider to be the next best song. Hooray for judging art!

  • Song:
          Albert Camus

2. The Hold Steady – Stay Positive

Titus Andronicus sign to XL Recordings

XL Recordings, current home to Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, M.I.A., Ratatat, The White Stripes and others has just today announced the signing of relative unknown (except to those LivingEars frequenters), but totally awesome Titus Andronicus.

For those not familiar the band one might liken their sound to a lo-fi-punk-literary explosion of goodness with a tinge of Desaparecidos era Conor Oberst whine (Just don’t make that comparison in front of lead singer Patrick Stickles).

In all honesty the bands debut album, The Airing of Grievances is one of the best debuts I’ve heard all year and will most definitely be making its way into my top 10 favorite albums of the year. The album was released earlier this year via Troubleman Unlimited and will be seeing a much wider release in January 09 thanks to XL.

I’ve featured three of their songs in previous podcasts (check volumes 2 & 3, you may remember I was the only person in attendance at the bands SLC show, which is where I took the above picture) so check those and the songs below for proof of their greatness.

  •       Titus Andronicus - Waking Up Drunk (Spider Bags Cover

The one song that really sums Titus would be “Fear & Loathing in Mahwah, NJ” which you can grab over at Daytrotter along with 2 other songs. My favorite is “My Time Outside the Womb” which you can listen to in podcast volume two.

Lyrics to “Brueghel” and “Fear & Loathing” in the comments.

Congratulations Titus!

LivingEars Podcast Volume Three

It’s live and better than ever.

There is just so much damn music coming across our desk it’s impossible to fit it all in! Let’s see… keep an ear out for some brand new Conor Oberst, my .3 second remix of an LCD favorite and don’t be surprised if the Sebastien Tellier song at the end puts you in the mood. You might want to wait and listen to that track when you’re with your special someone…
